A Warning Regarding Modern Prophecy – Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!

I’ve been thinking about how much we are all trying to seek truth in this current environment of propaganda and blatant lies by people and organizations that we were taught to trust.  Once your eyes are open, there is no way to not continue seeing it!  So we start frantically digging for the truth.  For a source of truth.  We turn to people that are sharing what we want to hear.  The things that resonate with us.  Remember, what you focus on you will find–whether truth or not!

There are many podcast and alternate situation update videos accessible to us.  Some come in the name of ‘God’.  There are many of these components in these daily updates – scripture shared, hope, miraculous healings, projections of the future, and prayer.  Do not be fooled! The only truth is that truth which comes from the Word of God!  We must pray for discernment and we must stay in the Bible.   Proceed with caution!  Many of these are harmful!  They draw us away from God and what the scriptures say.   Here are some biblical scriptures with a few key points to consider as we all search for truth.

Modern prophecy is unbiblical and spiritually dangerous.

  1. It accepts fallible prophets and prophecies that don’t meet biblical requirements.But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.” You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?”  If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed.  Deuteronomy 18:20-22

    SpecifIcally note this scripture that tells us that sometimes false prophecy will take place but it is not from God.   The Lord could be testing us.  So turn away and find your truth in God’s word.  Trust him that He is sovereign.

    If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a sign or wonder, and if the sign or wonder spoken of takes place, and the prophet says, “Let us follow other gods” (gods you have not known) “and let us worship them,” you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul. It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.  That prophet or dreamer must be put to death for inciting rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. That prophet or dreamer tried to turn you from the way the Lord your God commanded you to follow. You must purge the evil from among you. Deuteronomy 13:1-5
  2. It degrades the true miraculous nature and purpose of prophecy and miraculous gifts.

    We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.  Hebrews 2:1-4

  3. It elevates the subjective leading of the spirit to objective revelation from God.  (They attach “authority’ to the revelation.)
  4. It leads people away from the centrality of obedience to scripture and away from spiritual growth.

    Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.  John 17:17Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.  They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.  Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules:  “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”?  These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.  Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.  Colossians 2:18-23

  5. It gives no sure basis of discernment and makes one susceptible to error.

    But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!  As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!  Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. Galations 1:8-10

    *The Scriptures are God’s sufficient, present voice to us.

    For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.  Hebrews 4:12-13

    The law of the Lord is perfect,
        refreshing the soul.
    The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
        making wise the simple.
    The precepts of the Lord are right,
        giving joy to the heart.
    The commands of the Lord are radiant,
        giving light to the eyes.
    The fear of the Lord is pure,
        enduring forever.
    The decrees of the Lord are firm,
        and all of them are righteous.

    They are more precious than gold,
        than much pure gold;
    they are sweeter than honey,
        than honey from the honeycomb.
    By them your servant is warned;
        in keeping them there is great reward.     Psalm 19:7-11

    *God’s perfect and complete revelation to us.

    All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness 2 Timothy 3:16

    The heavens declare the glory of God;
        the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
    Day after day they pour forth speech;
        night after night they reveal knowledge.
    They have no speech, they use no words;
        no sound is heard from them.
    Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
        their words to the ends of the world.
    In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
        It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
        like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
    It rises at one end of the heavens
        and makes its circuit to the other;
        nothing is deprived of its warmth.

    The law of the Lord is perfect,
        refreshing the soul.
    The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
        making wise the simple.
    The precepts of the Lord are right,
        giving joy to the heart.
    The commands of the Lord are radiant,
        giving light to the eyes.
    The fear of the Lord is pure,
        enduring forever.
    The decrees of the Lord are firm,
        and all of them are righteous.

    10 They are more precious than gold,
        than much pure gold;
    they are sweeter than honey,
        than honey from the honeycomb.
    11 By them your servant is warned;
        in keeping them there is great reward.
    12 But who can discern their own errors?
        Forgive my hidden faults.
    13 Keep your servant also from willful sins;
        may they not rule over me.
    Then I will be blameless,
        innocent of great transgression.

    14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
        be pleasing in your sight,
        Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

        Psalm 19
